Raptors vs Lakers: Battle of the Struggling Teams | NBA Game Preview (2026)

Can the Toronto Raptors bounce back yet again? After a tough overtime loss, they're heading west to face the Los Angeles Lakers, and the pressure is on! It's been nearly a month since the Raptors have tasted defeat in consecutive games, a streak they'll be desperately trying to preserve.

Since a rough patch on December 20th and 21st, the Raptors have shown resilience, going 8-5. However, they're now embarking on a grueling five-game road trip against Western Conference teams, starting with the Lakers. This follows a heartbreaking 121-117 overtime loss at home against the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday.

What's interesting is the Raptors' pattern: they've consistently responded to losses with a win, including three victories at home. Their only road victory in this pattern came against the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday.

In the Clippers game, Scottie Barnes led the charge with 24 points, while Jamal Shead contributed 15 points and 13 assists. Sandro Mamukelashvili added a valuable 22 points off the bench. The Raptors had a commanding lead, even up by 14 points at one stage, and held an 11-point advantage entering the fourth quarter.

But here's where it gets controversial... Toronto's offense stalled in the crucial final minutes. They were up 109-101 with just 3:35 remaining and failed to score again in regulation. They missed all 5 of their shots and a crucial free throw, plus a turnover. Coach Darko Rajakovic pointed out the missed opportunities, stating, "We got a couple of open shots that we needed to knock down." He also highlighted defensive struggles in the fourth quarter, where the Clippers scored 31 points. Rajakovic acknowledged the need for film review during the long flight to the West Coast.

Meanwhile, the Lakers are still searching for their winning formula, with a 5-9 record since December 20th. They started the season strong, going 9-4 without LeBron James, who was recovering from sciatica. But their performance has dipped to 5-7 since Austin Reaves suffered a calf strain, including a Christmas Day loss against the Houston Rockets.

After conceding 135 points against the Charlotte Hornets, the Lakers then lost 132-116 on the road to the Portland Trail Blazers. The Lakers were without key players like Luka Doncic (groin), Deandre Ayton (knee), and Jaxson Hayes (hamstring) for the Blazers game.

Lakers coach JJ Redick reflected on the team's injury woes, saying, "Every team goes through it. I'm not saying we're singled out, but this has just been our season."

In the Blazers game, Marcus Smart scored 25 points for Los Angeles, while James added 20 points, 9 rebounds, and 8 assists. Drew Timme scored a career-high 21 points.

And this is the part most people miss... The Lakers previously beat the Raptors 123-120 on December 4th, with Rui Hachimura hitting a buzzer-beater. In that game, Reaves scored 44 points, and Barnes had 23 points for Toronto.

What do you think? Will the Raptors continue their trend of bouncing back, or will the Lakers find their rhythm? Share your predictions and thoughts in the comments below!
