China has escalated tensions in the region by launching rockets into waters near Taiwan, marking the second consecutive day of extensive military exercises intended to simulate a blockade. These maneuvers are part of a broader display of military strength, as the Chinese armed forces introduced new amphibious assault ships and deployed various bomber aircraft and naval vessels. This show of force has been characterized by Beijing as a "stern warning" directed at separatist movements and foreign intervention.
Since 1949, Taiwan has operated independently from China after the civil war that resulted in the Communist Party's establishment of power on the mainland. Despite this, China has consistently claimed Taiwan as an integral part of its territory and has expressed strong discontent over U.S. arms sales to the self-governing island.
The ongoing military drills encompass ten hours of live-fire exercises conducted across five different locations surrounding Taiwan. The Eastern Theatre Command of China’s People’s Liberation Army has released footage showing a mobile PCH-191 rocket launcher firing projectiles into the sea from an undisclosed site within China. According to military sources, rockets have been launched into waters both to the north and south of Taiwan.
In addition to these rocket firings, naval and air force units have practiced attacking maritime and aerial targets, as well as conducting anti-submarine operations in areas adjacent to the island. Dubbed "Justice Mission 2025," these exercises are notable for being the most extensive in terms of geographical range and proximity to Taiwan thus far.
These military activities commenced just 11 days after the United States unveiled a significant arms package valued at $11.1 billion (approximately £8.2 billion) for Taiwan. A senior intelligence official from Taiwan has indicated that China seems to be utilizing these drills to refine its capabilities in targeting land-based assets, specifically referencing the U.S.-manufactured HIMARS rocket system, known for its mobility and striking range of about 300 kilometers (186 miles), capable of reaching coastal sites in southern China.
In a recent Facebook update, Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te assured the public that frontline troops are ready to defend the island, while emphasizing that Taipei is not seeking to exacerbate the current situation. Taiwan’s defense ministry reported that, in the 24 hours leading up to 6 AM local time, 130 Chinese military aircraft and 22 naval and coastguard vessels were observed operating around Taiwan.
While Taiwan's Civil Aviation Authority noted that 11 out of the island's 14 flight routes were impacted by the ongoing military drills, it confirmed that no international flights had been canceled. However, direct routes to the offshore islands of Kinmen and Matsu, located close to China's coastline, remain blocked, affecting approximately 6,000 passengers.
