Is Big Oil a Cartel Holding Us Hostage to Climate Chaos and Sky-High Energy Bills?
As the world grapples with the escalating threat of global warming and the financial strain of soaring energy costs, Michigan has taken a bold stand by filing a lawsuit that accuses major oil companies of acting as a cartel. This groundbreaking move alleges that these corporations have not only fueled the climate crisis but also artificially inflated energy prices, leaving consumers with few affordable options. In a first-of-its-kind legal action, Michigan’s Attorney General, Dana Nessel, targeted four oil giants—BP, Shell, Chevron, and Exxon Mobil—alongside the American Petroleum Institute (API), the largest U.S. oil lobbying group. The lawsuit accuses them of violating federal and state antitrust laws by colluding to suppress clean technology and mislead the public. According to the filing, without these alleged efforts, EVs would be a common sight across Michigan, from assembly lines in Flint to driveways in Dearborn and charging stations in Grand Rapids.
But this is the part most people miss: the lawsuit highlights how electricity costs in Michigan have surged by nearly 120% over the past two decades, while EV adoption remains sluggish, accounting for less than 4% of registered vehicles statewide. Nessel bluntly stated, “These out-of-control costs are not the result of natural economic inflation, but due to the greed of these corporations who prioritized their own profit and marketplace dominance over competition and consumer savings.”
The oil industry, unsurprisingly, has pushed back. ExxonMobil dismissed the lawsuit as “legally incoherent,” while API’s general counsel, Ryan Meyers, called it a “coordinated campaign against an industry that powers everyday life.” BP declined to comment, and the defendants have yet to respond formally.
The lawsuit doesn’t just stop at recent actions—it traces the alleged conspiracy back nearly 50 years, pointing to a 1979 Exxon internal report that predicted catastrophic global heating unless a massive shift to renewables occurred. Instead of embracing clean energy, the companies are accused of using tactics like patent lawsuits, trade associations, and even hiring hackers to suppress competition and mislead the public.
This case isn’t just about Michigan. It’s part of a growing wave of climate accountability lawsuits, with 10 other states and 60 subnational governments taking on Big Oil. Together, these jurisdictions represent over a quarter of the U.S. population. And yet, the fossil fuel industry is fighting back fiercely, lobbying Congress for immunity from such lawsuits and urging the Supreme Court to intervene.
