Apple's Late Decision on iPhone Fold Display: A Premium Scratch-Resistant Choice
Apple's highly anticipated iPhone Fold is reportedly set to feature a premium display film, making it more scratch-resistant than its competitors. This decision, made very late in the engineering process, could be a game-changer for Apple's foldable phone.
According to The Elec report, Apple is considering two film materials for the iPhone's foldable glass. The film, which users will touch, is crucial for protecting the underlying display. While Samsung uses polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film, Apple is leaning towards a transparent polyimide (PI) film.
The report suggests that Apple is yet to finalize its decision on foldable display technology. However, a transparent PI film is considered the most likely choice. Initially, Apple planned to use PET, but later explored the benefits of a transparent PI film.
Time is of the essence, as Apple must make this decision soon. Historically, screen decisions are made in September, allowing ample time for OLED substrate fabrication. Test production typically begins around mid-February, with mass production trials starting in May.
The foldable iPhone's smaller demand might work in Apple's favor. Unlike regular iPhones, Apple doesn't usually stockpile foldable phones. The high price tag of $2,000+ suggests it won't be a blockbuster seller. This could give Apple more flexibility in production timelines.
Apple aims to differentiate its product with a premium solution. The transparent PI film offers higher surface hardness, making it less susceptible to scratches. This is a significant advantage for buyers of Apple's first foldable iPhone.
With the iPhone Fold expected to be unveiled this fall, a final decision on the film material is imminent. Chinese firm Lens Technology is reportedly tasked with producing the foldable glass display and bonding the chosen film to the screen. The iPhone Fold's inner display is rumored to be 7.8 inches with an invisible crease, setting it apart from the competition. The outer display is expected to be 5.5 inches.
If the rumors are accurate, the iPhone Fold will launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max this fall. The Elec, known for its supply chain insights, raises doubts about last-minute changes to the screen. Despite this, Apple's decision on the display film could significantly impact the iPhone Fold's scratch resistance and overall appeal.
